e-Flyer - SAFETY-CRITICAL SYSTEMS CLUB (SCSC) |
Hello Guest, Hello to all SCSC members, we hope you have had a great summer! One-day Seminars for 2024 Thank you to all who supported our first two Safe AI focussed seminars in April and June, Frameworks for Safe AI Systems and Developing Safe AI Systems. On 26th September we have our third and final AI seminar of the three: Deployment, Operations and Maintenance of Safe AI Systems, This 1-day seminar looks at bringing AI systems into service: what needs to be done to prepare, how to operate them safely in a given context and how to maintain them. Speakers include:
Who should attend? This seminar will be useful for all those involved in deploying, using, managing or maintaining AI systems. To make your booking please see here: https://scsc.uk/e1133 The SCSC in Europe Safe Autonomous Transport - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly will take place in central Munich at the Eurostars Book Hotel, Schwanthalerstraße 44, 80336 München, Germany. This 1-day seminar looks at progress in autonomous & highly automated transport and problems that have been encountered. It will also cover the latest developments in the standards arena. It features industry speakers and a discussion session. Who should attend? Speakers include:

Working Groups Safe System Architecting Working Group (SSAWG) The recently formed Safe System Architecting Working Group (SSAWG) is a joint initiative between the INCOSE UK Architecture Working Group and the Safety Critical Systems Club, with a vision of addressing systems safety through the promotion of choosing, using, and developing appropriate architectures. The group’s web page provides details on its aims and objectives - https://scsc.uk/gw. The next meeting is scheduled for 9th October 2024, 3pm-5pm (BST), an online meeting link is available on the web page. Contact jane.fenn@scsc.uk for more details. Safe AI Working Group (SAIWG) The newly formed Safe AI Working Group (SSAWG) recently held its first meeting. The group’s web page provides details on its aims and objectives - https://scsc.uk/gb. Contact alan.simpson@ebeni.com for more details. For a list of all upcoming Working Group meetings please see the Events Diary (https://scsc.uk/events?tab=working) If you would like to participate in one or more of these please contact the group leader. Safety Futures Initiative (SFI) Working Group The Safety Futures working group meets once a month to bring together fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and insights. The Safety Futures is diligently working on developing a comprehensive roadmap to guide new safety professionals in exploring career paths across various industries. To supplement this, we have an upcoming initiative to create a University 'League' Table to rank universities based on their safety engineering courses and the career pathways they support. We are also looking to start a reverse mentoring programme where we can match more experienced people with new professionals for information exchange. The next meeting will be 29th October 2-4pm so please do reach out to Khadijah Khatun, khadijah.khatun@scsc.uk, if you would like to attend or if anything about the group takes your interest. We encourage anyone to get involved to help shape the future of safety engineering careers. Newsletter The latest edition of the SCSC newsletter is available at: https://scsc.uk/newsletter
In 2017 the world witnessed the horrific tragedy of the Grenfell Tower fire that claimed the lives of 72 people making it one of the deadliest UK residential fires. Laura Mills describes the legislative changes and assesses what progress has been made in ensuring fires of this magnitude never occur again. Evidence Management – A Policing Perspective - Bill Blackburn Bill Blackburn provides an understanding of the operational practices in policing where the establishment of reliable evidence is critical for prosecutions. Bill draws parallels with the evidential requirements to support a safety case for safety-critical systems and asks what we can learn from policing practices, such as how we can better position ourselves should a safety incident result in a more formal investigation, potentially leading to court. Article: Is there something hidden in the code? - Gavin Wilsher Gavin Wilsher describes an example of where undesirable code appears to have been deliberately inserted into a train control system rendering it inoperative after maintenance at a 3rd-party site. He explores whether the safety community should do more to ensure these types of issue do not find their way into safety-related / critical software whether deliberate, inadvertent, or through the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence. Article: AI Safety: Navigating the Expanding Landscape of Potential Harms - Ibrahim Habli Ibrahim Habli and John McDermid look at how the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is adding pressure on the safety community to rethink the boundaries of safety engineering. The rise of AI is exposing a wider spectrum of harms, with significant moral, social and economic impacts. Can the safety-critical community realistically expand the scope of safety to address these intangible yet impactful AI-induced harms? eJournal Vol. 3 Iss. 2, the summer issue of the Safety-Critical Systems eJournal is available here:https://scsc.uk/SCSC-196, featuring three peer-reviewed papers:
