Wanted: Safety-critical wireless communications! This presentation will expose issues surrounding the reliable transmission of data within safety critical systems. The aim is to make these systems even safer. In particular this presentation will explore the reliability of safety-critical 'wireless' communication links. Wireless links typically connect intermittently, are subject to interference and relatively easy to eavesdrop on. Conversely wireless communications are attractive, they are relatively easy to establish and can be distant, however they are also harder to defend than mechanical or wire communication links. So are they a lost cause or rising star? As systems become bigger, more complicated and complex, so too does communication. As the number of messages increases so does the risk of communication failure. If the system is, say, reading sensors it may not matter if a few messages get missed. But, if you are controlling and actuating things at distance, the consequences can be serious. So, is there a way forward for including wireless communications in safety critical systems? Specifically, in the context of command and control systems operating at distance. Such as addressing the emerging market in operating autonomous devices and vehicles at distance, both on this planet and on others. Find out how new technologies are making safety-critical wireless possible.
