Abstract:

Self-driving cars have the potential to make traffic safer, smoother and more fuel-efficient. Driver error is a contributing factor in the majority of traffic accidents and automation means removing these errors from the traffic system. However, automation also means that other sources of errors, such as design errors, technical faults and insufficiency in understanding the environment are added to the system. Efficient strategies to handle these dependability challenges are key for market introduction of self-driving cars.
